Frugal Style and Beauty Tip for Midlife Singles on a Budget

With the current state of the economy and a number of the Baby Boomers segueing into their retirement years as well as many of the 40 something and 50 something boomers moving into be self-employed (aka “early retirement,” being pushed out of the “job” market and working for themselves) many Boomers are needing to manage their finances on a tighter budget than what they were used to formerly.

However, you still want to look good, right?  You want to look your best.  I am an avid proponent of looking YOUR best, not aiming to resemble someone else, not covering yourself up with excessive make up and styling products.  When you want to look your best on a budget and practice excellent self-care and grooming, how can you do so while still on a budget?  Men have the option of going to a barber shop where they can get a hair cut and be well-groomed for a very good price.  However, what are the ladies to do?  What about when the single boomers have a special date coming up and want to look your polished best while sticking to your monthly budget?  No longer can you just dash over to the top hair salons for color enhancement, a set and style.  The top salons charge a hefty amount.  Certainly, their fees are well-deserved.  However, aren’t there some other options when you are on a tighter budget?  Or when you are on a limited monthly income?

By the way, frugal beauty and style tips are not just for the baby boomer set.  The 2o somethings often are juggling their finances, managing a new income while paying off student loan debt.  They want to stay in the black each month as well.  And the folks who are millionaires and more make the excellent point that it is not how much you earn each month, but rather how much you keep at the end of the month which contributes to Wealth building.  Many of the wealthiest rich people out there practice some frugal habits as well in order to keep more of their hard earned money.

So what are some ways still to look good while practicing frugal style?  Go to a beauty school for your beauty treatments.

There are many beauty schools around.  Some are national chains and offer local school branches in your area.  Other beauty schools are single location venues only in your city.  Most beauty schools have their more advanced students practice and hone their beauty, grooming, and styling skills on live clients.  The students initially work on mannequin heads.  Once they have mastered their skills and are ready to work on live people, they advance and moved into the pool of students who may service clients at the school.   Typically, the students who provide the services do so under the guidance and direction of an instructor at the school.  When you phone to make your appointment, do ask what that school’s policy is.

What is the best way to locate a school?  1.  Do ask around at your local chamber of commerce or networking group.  Who do you know who recommends a beauty school?  Additionally, is there a student for a particular treatment whom they recommend?  2.  Search for a beauty school online via an internet search engine.  Enter the term, “beauty school” plus the name of your town or city and see what results are returned.  Many of the school offer a full range of salon services at a frugal price perfect for managing your budget.  A number of the beauty schools with more advanced websites provide a listing of their salon services right on their website.  Phone the school and verify they provide the service you are looking for.  Then go ahead and schedule an appointment.

This way you can look great and still stick to your style and beauty budget in frugal times!

  1. Excellent advice April! I had a perm at one of these schools a couple of years back. It was a win-win all around. I got a nice new hairstyle on a budget. The student earned points towards her certification. Plus, we both had the great feeling of helping someone.
