Happy Halloween

Just a quick note tonight.  Happy Halloween.  There is lots to do and so many parties to attend.  Go out and have fun.  Just remember to have fun and play safe.

In San Francisco, Halloween is always closely connected with the older gay community traditions back when culture required gays to be closeted.  It’s kinda hard to explain, but think back to the 1960s.  Drag queens dressing up on Halloween is part of San Francisco’s rich tradition.  So much so that now The Castro (one of “the gay” areas of the city) is a tourist trap on Halloween night. It used to be fun, but now there are simply too many people that the crowd control makes attending prohibitive.

Police officers have to be on hand because so many people are trying to fit into a very small essentially at its heart, a 2 block space (Market to 18th Street and then up to 19th Street).  Over the years, the party has spread.

It’s best for San Franciscan locals to go EARLY to see some of the best and most dramatically decked up Drag Queens, preferably sporting a full bushy mustache just to make it more fun.  And everyone goes – the LGBT community (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender), as well as plenty of straights and not so straights.

Around the country, there are parties to attend and public parties if your friends didn’t create something.  Things can get a little crazy, so just use some extra caution, and have fun!

  2. I can see where the “Castro” is a toutist trap after reading your post April. I don’t live anywhere close but it would be a fun event to witness at least once in my life.

I’m not a big buff of Holloween, but this sounds interesting.

  3. Halloween is a great time to try on a new you . . . whether that be dressing like Col Custer or decking out in sequins as a guy.

I missed Halloween this year, but there are many more to come!

  4. In the UK, this is a busy time of year.
We had Diwali (Festival of Lights) on October 17, then Halloween, and the next UK party is Bonfire Night on November 5 – let the firework’s commence!

  5. Halloween is a great time to test out new personalities, wigs, looks. I have a brunette friend who wore a blond bob wig and it looked so great on her I encouraged her to switch permanently.

Test out a new look if you’re short on ideas for costumes.

  6. Guess I’m late for all the parites :))

Only had one “Trick or Treat” door knock at Holloween time for the past 10 years in the the same house. Might be the neighborhood kids has all grown up already.
