Happy Canada Day or Fête Du Canada to all our Canadian cousins both here in the United States and in Canada. Americans are all getting ready to celebrate our 4th of July Independence Day in 3 days. However, our Canadian cousins are already celebrating their nation’s birthday today. Many of the same sort of 21st century celebration behavior occurs in both countries. And all of these celebration activities offer singles more opportunities both to have fun and to stretch themselves and meet new people.
Now, I have to mention a true confession. Here I often cite how as we age and even as young as 35 years old, we get set in our ways. Much of that has to do with evolutionary psychology and our stabilizing craving for the familiar to feel “safe.” Additionally, one of the contributing factors for why we often continue in a pattern of behavior is we often simply do not already know of another way to do it. And frankly, we are already quite busy with our daily lives and may not really have the time or know what quality resources to avail ourselves of to experiment with new ways of doing things. Yes, we become…. Creatures of Habit.
Well, me, too.
Which is one of the reasons why I make a point to provide a ton of optional ways to meet new people and in particular ways to meet new singles. Sometimes it can feel exhausting or overwhelming and like it is just not happening for you. However, the perennial truth for singles is….” All it takes is one person.” This is so incredibly true. In the meantime, practice meeting and enjoying the company of many people. Practice perceiving and reflecting back to others their unique wonderfulness.
There are Canada Day celebrations all around the country, of course, yes in Canada. Additionally, there are Canada Expat groups all around the United States, many of which host some kind of a picnic or BBQ celebration. Put on something featuring a Maple Leaf, and go ahead and go. You will meet new people, try some new foods, and have a blast.
As you celebrate Canada Day, reflect on the wonderful variety of ethnic heritages and languages which comprise the country. Nosh on some of the unique foods of Canada, i.e. Maple flavored items instead of the ubiquitous American flavor of chocolate. Lift a Labatt’s or a Molson Golden (well-chilled, please), and go ahead and belt out “Oh Canada!”
And remember, Hockey Season starts in just over 2 months!

July 1, 2010 at 5:33 PMNow that I am residing in Chicago, Illinois. I did exactly what you talked about in your article (except the beer–I drank a brand from Nova Scoita called Moosehead beer). My USA work colleagues were inquisitive about our holiday. In return, I will experience 4th of July celebrations. I have seen it on TV numerous times but to be in downtown Chicago should be fun. Great article.

Your comment regarding “Maple flavored foods” represents a stereotype of Canadian culture that is inaccurate.

August 8, 2010 at 7:56 PMHi Hezron,
Thanks for stopping by and commenting at my blog. Certainly, the Maple Flavored thing could be the what the extensive Expat population in California reflect vs, of course, the over 34 million Canadians in Canada.
