Gene Simmons and Shannon Tweed Got Married?

The Hollywood Entertainment Wedding of the Year:  Gene Simmons Shannon Tweed Oct 1 2011 Wedding

Romantic Couple, Marriage, Nuptials, Wedding, Romance, RelationshipYes, you read it right.  KISS bassist and vocalist Gene Simmons and his long time life partner, former Playboy model, Shannon Tweed tied The Knot earlier this month, celebrating their Nuptials on October 1st. The Gene Simmons and Shannon Tweed Wedding itself will air on the October 18th episode of Gene Simmons Family Jewels airing on A&E.

Simmons and Tweed Have 2 Children:  Nick Simmons and Sophie Tweed Simmons

Now mind you, they do already have two children together, Nick Simmons (born 1989) and Sophie Tweed Simmons (born 1992). Nick’s full name is Nicholas Adam Tweed-Simmons, although he usually goes by “Nick Simmons.”  He served as a groomsman in the Simmons Tweed Wedding while sister Sophie was mom Shannon Tweed’s Maid of Honor (MOH).  However, before the Belize It Or Not episode, Gene had never proposed marriage to Shannon.  Listening to her now, Gene proposing marriage to her was something she would have wanted.  So their not having been married was not necessarily completely what Shannon wanted all these years.  In many ways, it sounds like it was always really a bit more of what Gene wanted than Shannon did.

Simmons Tweed Union: Is Marriage “Just a Piece of Paper” or Is There Another Reason?

Still, after 28 years together in a Life Partner arrangement, why change things now?  Is marriage and a wedding ceremony “just a piece of paper” as some people say it is.  Indeed, by making their relationship now a legally defined one, they had to discuss and do a Prenuptial which even Shannon described as “like preparing for your divorce.”  Why change the nature of their relationship now?  Part of their discussion with their Marriage Therapist, Dr. Ann Wexler in the Belize It Or Not episode of  Gene Simmons Family Jewels covered the topic of fidelity.  Apparently Gene has been keeping a separate phone number just for where he could have other women phone and leave him messages.  Fidelity was never before a promised part of their Life Partner relationship.  Shannon described their being Life Partners as Gene “always having a back door” and having a bit of a Rock and Roll lifestyle fantasy of an “Open Relationship.”  In the Belize It Or Not episode with their Marriage Therapist Gene does promise fidelity to Shannon (with just about a “Finally!” popping out of her mouth.).  However, Shannon is very wise. She has been in a relationship with him for 28 years.  So, she still didn’t quite believe it and said she would have to see it over time to fully believe it from Gene.  The 3 of them agreed that trusting Gene, believing he would be faithful to her, was something he would have to rebuild with her.

Marriage and what that means does seem to be something of an issue for the Baby Boomer Generation.  The Boomer generation felt, and likely more so than earlier generations, that Marriage was an Institution and felt very much that it was already defined so that if they wanted a different kind of a relationship than that which was defined in Marriage (Think of all the 1950s and 1960s TV Shows depicting husbands and wives, like “Leave It To Beaver,” “Father Knows Best” and even “The Brady Bunch” from the 1970s), then they would have to not get married in order to live a different way and define their own relationship.

In many ways, because of Boomers having redefined relationships contemporary couples have more examples and are freer to define marriage each uniquely on their own terms.  It is one of the things I coach single men and single women to discuss completely and to define their relationship themselves.  I ask them early on, “What Kind of Relationship Do You Want?”  Because everything in marriage or a Life Partner relationship indeed is not completely defined anymore.  Because of that freedom to define your own relationship as you both want it, you do really need to surface expectations and discuss roles and responsibilities.  Plus, because life does change over time, you’ll need to discuss and redefine your relationship, wants, needs, abilities, and expectations again every few years.

Gene Simmons and Shannon Tweed, now Shannon Tweed-Simmons, seem to genuinely know each other and to love each other.  They entered marriage to each other already really knowing each other quite well, including all their foibles.  I with them well and hope they will have many more years of love together now as husband and wife.

  2. What a PHENOMENAL article! April, you have defined the evolving institution that is marriage in such a pragmatic and beautiful way. The marriage of Gene and Shannon is sure to be closely scrutinized for what the “real” reason is, however, like you, I am happy for them and wish them all the best!

  5. Great post. Marriage is what you want to make of it. I will be interested to see how the fidelity plays out because if it had been going for 28 years, once the honeymoon phase is over, I wonder what triggers will present that might bring back the old behavior.

  6. Great article April showing an insightful analyis of the celebrity couple.

I can’t believe how much is aired about their relationship – imagine if that was you and everyone knew about your partner’s spare phone! The price of fame?

I also wish them well, 28 years is a long time. I remember being very concerned when I got married after being together for 10 years, but luckily it’s been fine.

  7. Defining your marriage before you get married – what a spetacular idea. I agree 100% that marriages are different from couple to couple and that we need to break away from the dogma of a predefined marriage and create our own definitions.

  8. Great analysis April . I always wonder why some folk have commitment problems in their relationships. Hope they stay together for another 20+ years .

  9. April,
This is a great review of the Simmons-Tweed relationship and some very profound insights into relationships in the 21st century.

People who take advantage of your coaching expertise are indeed fortunate.

  10. I really liked how you mentioned their previous agreement at the beginning of the relationship (both were free to do what they wished) but that over time their needs changed and they’ve sat down and looked directly at what was and wasn’t working for them BEFORE they got married.

Takes a lot of guys to openly discuss your relationship in public and on the TV. I sure wouldn’t want to do it.

  11. Hi April!
I just find out at Michael’s D Walker site about Gene Simmons. I did not know who he was…the world is very big and too many people!
I have founf out that some kids from the Baby Boom generation are much more conservative about marriage than their parents. What do you think??
