Dating Coach’s Dating Tips for Singles: Essential Qualifying Questions to Ask Early, “Do you Like Hockey?”

Online Dating: Important to Raise Essential Interests Early While Dating and Courting

I’m not talking about covering your Relationship Must Have and Deal Breakers, because I think those more in-depth conversations are more appropriately done only once you have had a few dates and know that you are interested in possibly dating this person, not just initially becoming acquainted on the first few dates and vetting for actual in-person romantic chemistry, sparks, and connection.

This article is a bit more light-hearted for fans of any sport or other Fan Topic like ComiCon, Gaming, and other fun fan-based topics.

Do you even know what Hockey IS?

I’m teasing you all here, because in my family’s life, we LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE ice hockey.  I say that because there is also Field Hockey and with the European Union and all the men’s and women’s field hockey teams, one does need to be specific.

I know of married couples where the hockey fan made a point of gently introducing Hockey LOVE to the prospective spouse.  Gently inculcated for it during The Courtship.  As Hockey fans, we joke about it amongst ourselves in our tweetstream and twitter direct messages.

And God still has a sense of humor, because my brother’s fiance?  Doesn’t like hockey.  We are all OK with that… so long as she understands we are GLUED to the tube during Stanley Cup playoffs.

“Honey, I know we said we were going to to dinner at 8 pm.  However, we just entered the second period of sudden death overtime….”

We do not expect spouses to understand that statement completely.  We just need to communicate that THAT IS a sufficient excuse to eat a later dinner.

Now, of course, the fact that we are all together DOES mean we can be trusted, there is no one else.

Only Lord Stanley!

Now, what about YOU?

What is one of YOUR passions?

Let’s be real, your sports passion which you are hoping your future spouse will share with you?  or at least will put up with?

Screen for that during early dates.  Drop those words casually into singles dating conversations.  With your online dating sites profile for internet personals, include those in your KEY WORDS or Hot Lists.

Yup

I have hockey in mine.  Now, not all of my dates LOVE hockey.  But they are NOT surprised to hear I love it.  Truth in advertising, because I mentioned it early!  What’s yours?

Have fun and play safe!

Happy Dating and Relationships,

Update 2019: Wouldn’t you know it? God, yet again, has delivered to me a wonderful Life Partner man who isn’t into Hockey. My late husband wasn’t either. He has known my family and I liked and watched hockey, but I hadn’t sufficiently prepared him to understand that hockey playoff are similar to the World Series in Baseball with games being played multiple nights each week. My bad. But at least when it comes to the final week or two of Stanley Cup, he understands I’ll be recording and watching the games and we just agree to spend a few hours apart, each doing our own thing for a time.

  1. I’m so happy to read your ideas about attraction and how guys should bring up the sports they really like to watch with the girl he’s dating. This is the type of manual that needs to be given and not the random misinformation that is at the other blogs. Appreciate your sharing this greatest doc.

  2. excellent point for a hockey fan or any kind of a sports fan need to cover this very important information early one. I wonder why others don’t mention this as an important item during courtship.
