Having lived in San Francisco for years, dated and wed there and then dated massively again after being widowed quite young, I have loved the opportunity to get out mix it up and mingle with others so easily and casually in the SF Summer Street and Cultural Festivals.
It’s like the perfect answer to the quandary many SF Singles have, “Oh April, I don’t want to always be hanging out at a bar.” Of course in San Francisco we have a number of super classy bars at which to sip our cocktails like The Four Season’s Hotel. However, San Franciscans like variety and desire other options to keep things fresh and mix things up.
Cue the SF Summer Street Festivals, stage left…..
Can I just say we’re spoiled? And that’s a good thing? There is so much richness of culture and richness of ethnic cultures in San Francisco. That and add our perfect year-round perpetually temperate weather except for 3 days in July when you wish for more than God’s air-conditioning (The Fog) and 5 days in January when the rain is just torrential (beats years of drought any year). Well life can be pretty perfect here.
This weekend SF Singles have the marvelous 57th Annual North Beach Festival. North Beach blends an interesting offering of a bibliophile’s paradise with Italian cuisine in the heart of San Francisco’s “Little Italy.”
The gorgeous Catholic Church, a favorite for locals for weddings, is St. Peter and Paul Church at the Northern side of Washington Square Park. There are plenty of events including both Saturday and Sunday a daily blessing of the animals (cats loathe this event, so leave them at home and bring your other animal companions), City Opera of San Francisco performing Saturday afternoon, as well as Jazz concerts during the day. Naturally, in honor of North Beach’s Beat Generation roots, poetry readings will feature prominently throughout the weekend.
Locals will totally know that the Muni bus system will naturally be thrown off course. If you must drive to the event, plan ahead expecting that you will need to park blocks away from the event and walk several blocks. Ergo, plan on wearing nice walking shoes and leave the hi heels at home. Muni will be rerouting a number of bus routes which will affects folks over by the Caltrain as well as neighborhoods like Cow Hollow and the Marina.
Put on some sunscreen. Wear something fun which you can walk in. Bring spending cash as ATMs can be a challenge to access and there will be crowds. Many of the crafts vendors might take a debit card. Go with a few friends. Meet friends there. And mix it up. You’ll both have a blast celebrating the culture of North Beach and mingling with new people.

June 18, 2011 at 5:42 PMNow matter where I turn, what I listen to or what I watch, I always hear about the beauty and class of San Francisco. All the great dining and areas like “Little Italy” and beautiful places to visit and a great many people to get out and meet. The 57th Annual North Beach Festival sure seems like it would be quite a place to add in the tourist aggenda.
