Simple Dating Tip to Rock in a Frugal New Years Eve

To help singles and even the married folks keep a fun, festive, and frugal New Years Eve this year, I want to keep providing you some more tips this week.

Go to an AA Celebration of New Years

Not everyone wants to drink, whether they are a member of Alcoholics Anonymous or Al-Anon or not, on New Years Eve.  Certainly there are issues of driving around after you have been drinking as well as the other drivers.  Many of the other drivers out on the road on New Year Eve have been drinking and many of them are drunk.  A lot of people who are interested in celebrating New Years Eve want to avoid that.  Certainly that is one of the reasons couple celebrate at a hotel.  They book a beautiful room or suite for the occasion, celebrate there, and avoid all of the potentially drunk drivers on the road.

However, there is another place where people will be celebrating and not be drunken: An AA/Al-Anon New Years Celebration

A number of the metropolitan areas, one of the AA groups hosts a clean and sober celebration.  You do not have to be a member of AA to attend.  The ones I have heard of, they have an AA meeting at the beginning to tie-in the theme and keep the focus.  And then following the meeting, there is dance music on a dance floor.  These are not giant large soirees, however, they are fun, and the price tag was often low, around $25.00 or so. By now, it’s likely steeper, but they are typically hosted at a Church or somewhere both inexpensive and with a sizeable space for dancing. Another treat? The lighting is subdued but not super dark like at the bars. So, you’ll be able to have conversations with folks there. Typically, the biggest expense is the great DJ.

Phone the AA phone number in your phone book and inquire.  Also, phone some of the sort of community center facilities including some of the non-denominational churches, Unity, or Unitarian churches and ask if they are hosting anything.  Even if they are not, often because of the size of their facility, outside groups rent the place for the evening to hold an event.  If they are at a community center or church, the price tag is likely to be low.  You can still dress up inexpensively, rent a snazzy outfit, and have fun all on a shoestring budget for less than the $150-500 a head price tag of so many New Year’s Eve celebrations.

If it wouldn’t be New Years without your sipping some champagne, just wait until you get home to pop open the bottle and sip a glass of a bottle you bought yourself.  The price the champagne will be frugal then, too.

What do we do? Usually attend a dance, kiss under the stars in the center of town at Midnight and lift a glass of Martinelli’s.

  1. I am one of those people who doesn’t always like to drink. Actually, I almost never “like” to drink. I usually have a drink because of the influence of others around me. If I have a girlfriend over and I offer her an alcoholic beverage, she’ll often respond with “ok, if you’re having one.” Then I feel obligated to have one. I just don’t enjoy the way I feel the next day, even if I’ve only had one or two drinks.

I love the idea of an AA New Years Eve party, or of staying over at a hotel that is hosting a party. Great ideas as usual!
