Los Angeles Jewish Singles Advice: 3 Tips When You Attend the Beverly Hills International Music Festival

Sponsored by Temple Emanuel, Israeli Consulate General of Los Angeles, Jewish Music Commission of Los Angeles, and other non-Jewish sponsors this August the festival marks its 8 year. All week long music students get four private lessons, attend one Master Class, workshops with faculty artists, listen to lectures, and have intensive playing and practicing opportunities with international and local musical artists.

Every night of the festival they have a concert always at 8:00 pm, each concert has a different theme.  The opening night of the festival opening concert features music from Israel.

A couple of things here for you.

1.  In general, because of the significant sponsorship by multiple Jewish organizations means just sort of organically the even will be well attended by others Jews.  So, you can go to any of the concerts and you’d likely just sort of casually and comfortably and know that it’ll be a target-rich environment for you to meet other Jews and hey some who really enjoy classical music. You’ll have 2 things in common already now offering you easy conversation starters!

2.  Additionally, in a more focused manner, my guess is that the opening festival concert featuring music from Israel will have a lot more Jews attending.  I don’t know about you, but I’d be inclined to leverage the Law of Large Numbers and go to that concert for sure.  Of course, I might recommend that you attend some of the other concerts as well. It should be an amazing week for classical music lovers, which I am.

You can purchase tickets online directly online.  Check the site for the latest schedule and any last minute changes of artists.

The Concert Schedule is cited there at the Festival’s website.  However, the fuller description including which composers’ music will be featured in the evening’s concert is up in  PDF flyer at Temple Emanuel’s blog:

I have not been to the event previously myself, so I can not be too precise about exactly how to leverage its specifics.  However, I’ll draw on my years of working for McCarter Theater in Princeton, NJ and later at the Metropolitan Opera as well as being formally active in The Arts Scene Young Professionals Audience Development area in San Francisco when I lived there.

Dress to Impress – Shake Off Your Cocktail Dress

Now is not the time to wear your cargo shorts or flip flops.  I hardly need say this to the women because typically we are the ones who are scampering to embrace the opportunity to dress up a bit and look fabulous.  Ladies, oh yes, yeah whee!  Time to pull out your prettiest and a touch sexy cocktail dresses.  I don’t know potentially how super dressy say the opening night concert crowd gets.  And trust me, I have attended opening night galas where we are to wear full fledged evening gowns, ballgowns, not just something “off the rack” aka Prêt à Port.  However, unless really about 90% of the crowd is wearing formal wear, if you do and many others are not, they you’re doing that could be potentially off putting.  Wistful sigh.  So leave the ballgown at home and go with a fabulous cocktail dress to signal approachability to men.

Dress to Impress – Break Out Your Evening Jacket

Guys, you, on the other hand, can dress up as much a you want pretty much.  OK, semi-formal wear.  Think to wear either your sharpest dark suit, or even an interesting color evening jack aka tuxedo jacket.  If everyone else is wearing black you have the chutzpah to carry off color, then, guys, oh my, fan myself it’s heating up in here, do it!  Men who show a little umph like that are always super sexy to women.  Yes, we often love and marry guys who have at least something of a mensch side to them, but we do want a man to be a little bit….. interesting.  It curls our toes.

Go Early

Even if they don’t have any pre-event item for socializing and mingling like a wine and cheese cocktail party before hand, go early.  Mill about in the lobby.  Strike up conversations with anyone else who is there regardless of whether they are single or not.  You will send the message emanating out from you that you are attractive, friendly, and approachable.  Thus making it easier for anyone else to talk to you who might indeed be single.  Besides, maybe they have a single friend, son, or daughter. Really, you never know.

BTW, I know I’m from the goyim and you might think I wouldn’t use Yiddish.  I’m all very tongue in cheek when I say that. However, I grew up in the Tr-State area and Yiddish is just part of the area vernacular.  We all use it.  It’s like it’s in the water. 🙂  Just look at how often I use “oy” on my Facebook wall.

The venue looks very interesting and would give people a chance to dress up and go have a lot of fun. It really looks like some organizations are putting forth quite an effort on the festivities including a lot of Jewish organizations.
