Jazz Legend Louis Armstrong serenaded us with, “When you’re smiling the whole world smiles with you…” Psychologists from the University of Amsterdam and the University of Ultrecht have conducted scientific research about smiling and how people respond to it.

The professors found that the mere SEEING of someone else’s smile, like seeing a frown and seeing a YAWN actually TRIGGERS our own facial muscle mirroring response to want to return in kind.  When WE SEE a smile, WE WANT to smile, too.  It’s the old Monkey See, Monkey Do response.  Parents of babies and young children know the fun of playing facial emotion mirroring games with their youngsters.  Your smile actually elicits the smile of others.  When we smile, we trigger HAPPY FEEL GOOD hormones to be released in the brain.  And then we associate all of that Happiness with the one we are looking at which just could be you!  When you are flirting to attract the romantic interest of other singles, all that happiness and feel good feelings are associated with you.  Same thing on a first date.

Smiling and laughing are essential components of Body Language Flirting.  And you want to include YOUR smiling and YOUR laughing so that your flirting takes on YOUR style of EXPRESSING YOUR uniqueness.  The more you share and express your own uniqueness, the more You ATTRACT and MAGNETIZE people to you with the MAGNETIC POWER of YOUR essence.  That way the people who are then attracted to you are drawn to YOU and well-suited to YOU.

You communicate your radiant health in your smile with your good grooming, brushed and flossed teeth, bleached teeth, and breath mints.  Evolutionary psychology studies show that we desire and are attracted to POTENTIAL MATES who show and display attributes of GOOD HEATH.  Your healthy smile communicates that.  As you share your smile, you additional pique their interest.

  1. Some companies apparently have their Customer Service staff fix a mirror on their PCs so that they can check they are smiling – because it does come through in the voice.

    I tried suggesting that at my company, but as the Bible says, some fell on stony ground.

    If you want to prove this to yourself, simply make eye contact with people you pass today and smile. It will be a rare person who will not smile back.

    Nothing lights up a face like a nice smile. And, of course, as an Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon, I like the idea of good oral hygiene as well!

  6. April, I’ve recently had this reinforced with my own children. As a result of my chemo treatment I ended up losing/shaving my beard and hair–which I have had for all of their lives. This of course makes me look so different to them. But, I have found that if I make sure I throw out my big smile at them their face instantly changes to recognizing me. Smiling is so good for the soul too.

    And as you mentioned, it’s very contagious.
    Its one of my favorite things to do when walking through the hallways at work. It’s rare that people don’t smile back
