7 Brides for 7 Brothers Delivers Love Message Still

I first heard about MGM’s classic Hollywood musical romance, “7 Brides for 7 Brothers,” in “That’s Entertainment” featuring all it’s fun American frontier stories of Oregon Territory courtship. The movie remains fresh for today’s audience to view and glean romantic lessons on flirting and courtship.

The musical numbers feature men dancing in very masculine ways, from “Goin’ Courtin'” to  the Social Dance, with its adorable switching of male dance partners and male lumber jacking skill set competitive demonstrations, to the darling male chores song and dance number, “Lonesome Polecat.”  Thank goodness, this landmark classic MGM musical is screened at least annually on my favorite cable station, Turner Classic Movies – TCM.

TCM regularly screens a short documentary on the importance of screening movies in Letterbox format.  The Social Dance number in “7 Brides for 7 Brothers” is precisely one of the preeminent example cinema scenes which is significantly diminished by being screened in the truncated fashion most television stations do.

Singles can still learn love lessons from this classic MGM musical film in Millie’s lessons of “Goin’ Courtin'” to the 6 younger brothers on how to approach and court women.  We ladies do like our men masculine as well as polished up with a few social skills.  The first dinner scene at the Pontipee homestead household is a classic demonstration to modern guys about how NOT to behave with women when dating.

Secondarily, the townswomen are all receptive to the men’s overtures, exhibiting feminine charms and ways at the town house raising picnic.  When men pursue us, yes, they want a challenge, but they also desire a woman who is receptive to his romantic advances.  All women desire a man to have gentlemanly manners.  It shows her early on that he will treat her with cherishing care and be tender with her female heart.

Last summer, I had the thrill not only to view this charming classic musical on the large screen, but also to meet NY City Ballet’s former premier male danseur, Jacque D’Amboise, who starred as Ephraim Potipee.  Whenever you get a chance to view these classic Hollywood gems on the large screen like TCM provides each spring at the Turner Classic Film Festival, by all means, go! Not only will you get to savor these cinematic classics as they were meant to be enjoyed, you will, secondarily, get to meet many other film buffs who share your love of the Hollywood classics.  Expand your social circle, and you’re well on your way to finding your perfect life mate at any age!
