Internet Dating Textetiquette Texting Tip #1 for Singles: She Gave You Her Phone Number for a Reason

Whether you are a 20 something member of the Millenials generation or over 35, dating after 40 or dating again after 50, if you are single looking for love online you face texting.

Romantic Couple Meeting Over Internet Dating

Modern day internet dating singles will invariably encounter the modern communication medium of texting and it will become a variable in your segueing successfully to the first date.

Internet Dating Phone Tip:  What Is She Expecting?

What social expectation does your prospective date have when you get her phone number from a modern single woman?

I’m not saying that texting is this brand new cultural phenomena.  However, there really do get to be some generational differences about how single men and women view using texting to navigate to the First Date.

Internet Dating Phone Tip:  You Emailed First Right?

If you two met online at an internet dating site, you two very likely exchanged at least a few email messages using the dating site’s webmail feature where you two had the benefit of all those safety features.

So by the time the two of you exchanged phone numbers, you two had in all likelihood already established that you both were interested in meeting for a first date and may very well have agreed to a first date.

Internet Dating Phone Tip:  Phone Number Exchange Now What?

Well now that the single man has his PD (Prospect Date)’s cell phone number what are the two of you expecting each other to do?

Internet Dating Phone Tip:  Expecting a Date

The single woman gave you her phone number because you asked for her cell number when you said you wanted to ask her out on a date.  Why is she waiting for this?

So the single lady is now expecting you to phone her and ask her out on a date.

Internet Dating Phone Tip:  Not Pen Pals

Because that’s what you do at an internet dating site where the “What I’m Interested In” category didn’t just say “Pen Pals Desired.”

If you two had wanted pen pals, there are websites dedicated just to that.  When you are at a single online dating site, then what the two of you are seeking and looking for are actual dates and meeting each other.

I’ll be covering topics of Textetiquette for singles navigating the communicating to the First Date phase of internet dating all this week.  Check back daily for updates.

Please do chime in the comments section with your opinion, funny dating stories, and any confusion you need clarified and questions about internet dating and the modern etiquette of getting to the first date.

  1. I would say that texting for a date would be more excepted for singles in their 20’s….because I, in my early 40’s (oh ouch!), would rather be called than sent a text asking me out on a date. But that’s just me….

  2. My question would be, if she gives you her number, wouldn’t it be better to call rather than text her? I feel like a text is a weak way of getting one step closer than an email. At some point the man should be a bit more bold and certainly if she gives you her number, Now Is the Time!!!

  3. I agree with Kevin’s comment. While texting is sometimes the easiest way to ask someone out, it also seems a bit lazy. Especially if this is the first or second time we are going out. After we’ve gone out a few times a text is okay. But when asking for the first date especially, I’m looking for a call.

  4. That online dating is very complicated! Thanks God that you are there with all those tips and information to help singles find love!

  5. Oh boy – all these communication choices – so many ways to go wrong! Boy, do we need help – thank heavens for your column!

I agree, if I gave out my number, I would expect a call to ask for a first date, not a text.

April, is it still always the male who asks for the date, and the woman who expects to be asked?

  6. These are very good tips . It is a difficult process linking up with another person , more so than I imagined .

  7. I can only begin to imagine the nightmares created by the autocorrect option on your fancy texting gadget and some of the interesting situations that could arise. I tried sending a “Happy New Year’s” text, that ended up looking more like a 2 a.m. drunk phone call. Not fun.
