Christian Dating Tip: Pray for Your Future Spouse Now

If you talk with happily and lovingly married Christian / Catholic couples, and you ask them “what do you recommend to other couples to do to sustain and nurture their marriages?” Many of them will tell you a married Christian / Catholic couple‘s best practice habitual behavior to do is to pray for each other.  Many make it a practice to do some kind of daily or other kind of regular praying time together.  However, really, you will hear them say, “I make it a point to pray for my husband everyday…” or “When I’m driving to work, on the road, I take that time to commune with God and pray for my wife…”

Many Christian singles sort of store up that image, that hope that someday they will do that themselves for another.  And really what they’re doing is waiting.  They’re waiting to pray for their Soul Mate.

And instead what I want to suggest to you is that you pray for your future Soul Mate now.

Yes certainly, do follow the exhortation in the Bible to “go boldly before the throne room” and ASK God for a Soul Mate.  (You ARE doing that, aren’t you, in conjunction with a number of the happy action steps which I’ve been suggesting, aren’t you?)  However, what I’m talking about is that you actually pray like you would pray for a spouse for the future person NOW.

How would you pray for your spouse if you two were together now?

You’d ask for them to be protected, wouldn’t you?

You’d ask for blessings for them – financially, for physical health, for joy in their life, for them to feel God’s Hand in their lives, for the Lord’s presence, right?

You’d ask for them, most of all, to be held in God’s hand, much like the Irish Blessing.

You’d ask for all good things for them.  For resources, for friends, for close loving relationships in their family.  For personal growth and for them to push through their walls to be and become the person God wants them to be.

Those sort of things.

Well, go ahead.  You can do that now.  And then ask God to prepare you for them.

The year before I courted with my late husband, I prayed like that.  Usually just before bed time.  You might find you want to pray like that when you wake up in the morning for both of you starting your day with a shower of blessings and protection.

How will you pray?

Happy Dating and Relationships,

April Braswell

  1. It is very beautifull the idea that you are sharing with us. I would have never thougth it that way. What you are recommending is also a visualization of a desired future, isn’t it?

  2. In considering others, you’re also acknowledging and inwardly changing into the type of person you would like to be, while clarifying the qualities and desires in and for a mate, all in a prayerful petition. A lot of effect for a “simple” act.

  3. This is truly a pragmatic piece of advice in addition to an excellent spiritual one.
Because our attitude toward someone changes their behavior toward us, it just makes sense that praying for someone will engender a more affectionate attitude on their part.
    Great advice as always.

  4. When my brother was very young he heard a shrewish woman yelling at her husband and told my Mom, “I never want to get married”. My mother said, “Not all wives are like that, you just need to pray that you will get a good wife!”.

From that day forward, my brother prayer fervently for a good wife. When he got engaged, everyone marveled that he got such a beautiful, talented, charming wife….except his family who knew his secret. They just celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary!

  5. Excellent advise. I’ve never thought of praying to make myself ready for the person I would eventually be with.

  6. The Power of Prayer cannot and should not be underestimated, however – and I don’t know why – I never considered actually praying for my soulmate. We seem to count on the Big Guy to pull us out of situations that we don’t like, but haven’t thought about asking Him to put me in situations that I want. Great post, April …
