OC Singles Events Spike the Ball! Volleyball Game Friday Nov 18

OC Singles Events Spike the Ball! Volleyball Game Friday Nov 18 2011

Orange County Singles Events LDS Christian Singles Volleyball Game Fri November 18

The LDS Mid-Singles (31 – 45 years old singles) are sponsoring a fun pick up game of Volleyball on Friday, November 18th, 2011.  The Mid-Singles age group is 31 – 45 years old however most of them will allow you to join the social event if you are a year or two in either direction.  Just be considerate and appropriate.  The even while sponsored by an LDS Christian Singles group is open to both LDS and Non-LDS singles.  The one caveat is like that if you are divorcing and your divorce is not yet finalized, it is likely not appropriate to attend.  Just exercise some commons sense and graciousness.

The casual sports games are both a wonderful way to stay fit on a frugal single’s budget when you should be aiming to live according to your means, and socking more of your money away into savings and for your future.  And to combine this with a very casual and comfortable way to interact with other singles while doing a shared activity as Miss Manners used to recommend to singles relearning modern dating mores.  Having a share activity gives you both something fun to do and something constructive to do, it also then gives you safe and appropriate adult conversation fodder.

The importance of appropriate adult conversation fodder.  Many singles who are either freshly single after their divorce is complete or who are pushing themselves into the dating world after a social dry spell having focused so much of their efforts on building their career that they all rusty at how to make small talk with members of the opposite sex, let alone even talking platonically to members of your own gender.  It is important to practice social skill and dating skill of comfortably making small talk and to do so on a regular basis.

Unless you are a sales person regularly making sales calls in people’s homes, then you might be out of practice when it comes to making small talk.  The first time you speak with another person is not the time to talk with them like a member of the same 12 Step Program you are a member of.  12 Step Program conversations are not the same as small talk.  It is often bringing up elements of your life which are really much too personal to surface to talk about casually with a perfect stranger who you have only just met.

What the volleyball game will give you:  appropriate conversation fodder.

The game sure was fun.  You’re really good at spiking the ball.  How long have you been playing volleyball?  Did you play on a team in high school or college?

That game sure was fun.  I really rusty at playing volleyball.  It’s been years since I’ve played, but I really do enjoy it.  How about you?  Do you come to this game regularly?

The game really was fun.  I sure worked up an appetite.  Are you hungry?  A bunch of us are going to go grab a bite afterwards.  Would you like to join us?

Many singles of all ages report that they feel tongue tied trying to break the ice with other singles.  The game is your Conversation Starter.  Use some open ended questions like I cited which will help to serve you to open up a conversation.  You do not have to treat this as a first date with full dinner and conversation being required.  You are just practice, practice, practicing.  If someone is remotely interested in you, the conversation openers you lobbed them will help them to continue a conversation with you.  Once it is going a little bit, that really is all that is important:  to keep it moving.  You are not likely looking to close the deal and ask them out on a date right away and right now when you have just barely only met.  So no worries.  If you do feel some special sparks, guys, it’s your move.  Ask her for her phone number and repeat this phrase after me, “Can I get your number.  I’d like to ask you out on a date.  Would that be ok?”  Tell her that you want her phone number in order to ask her out on a date.  You should not use it to strive to become her new smart phone texting buddy or you waste her time and your time.

Having played the game together, and ladies you can do this in any variation of modern feminine dress.  From all the photos of me at my website and at Facebook, you can see I wear a number of outfits of modern fashion.  However, I have been to some areas of the country where I needed to dress more conservatively both in terms of “skirts and dresses only” and combined with a need to be a bit more covered up.  I have played volleyball in a longish denim skirt.  And I can do it when normally on a first date I’m in a class alluring cocktail dress with 3 inch heels, then you can, too.  The point I am making is, where whatever you feel comfortably playing volleyball in (Guys, probably wise to stick to pants to work out sportswear pants of some kind, and leave the skirts to the ladies, lol.).  So, if you’re like the Duggars on 19 Kids and Counting where the girls and Momma Dugger Michelle Duggar all wear skirts and dress in Modern Modest as they describe it, if you want to do that, you can.

    Hi April,

Another very helpful article. I really appreciate the small-talk conversation starters you have listed to “get the ball rolling” for those of us who may be out of practice or just aren’t very good at casually striking up a conversation.

This sounds like a really fun event … I haven’t played volleyball in ages and I really did enjoy playing.

    Stay Extraordinary, Neil

When I was in that age group. the neighbors would meet for volley ball every Friday night and then go out for burgers afterwards. It was so fun!!! Volley ball is a great mixer and a great stress reliever, too!

Great advice April (as always!) and your conversaion openers make it all seem so easy, well done! I also like that you say that guys should actually say “I’d like to ask you out on a date…. is that OK” that’s reallly good advice!

This sounds like a really fun event for active singles. A dating expert really has to look for such a variety of singles events.
